Denise Valin Alvarez OBE is Director of Global Trade Compliance at Burberry, she leads an international team based in UK, Americas and Asia, covering international trade across 100 borders.
Denise has worked in trade compliance for over 25 years both inhouse and in advisory roles and has expertise in cross border compliance. Her sector experience includes fashion, automotive, oil and gas, having worked for Repsol, Caterpillar Clothing, Ford/Visteon, Delphi, JP Morgan and EY.
Denise is a member of UK government working groups covering Trade and Customs at BEIS, DIT, DEFRA, CBI, BRC, BFA, BFC and is a member of The Strategic Trade Advisory Group (STAG), a forum for high-level strategic discussions between government, and key stakeholders on UK trade policy matters.
♦ Mr. Pablo Muñiz, Partner, Van Bael & Bellis
Pablo Muñiz is a partner in Van Bael & Bellis’ Brussels office. He has specialised in EU trade law since 2001, with a particular emphasis on EU customs law, including customs classification, origin issues, customs valuation controversies, export controls and sanctions. He regularly advises clients on multi-jurisdictional customs matters involving the European Commission, OLAF, and the World Customs Organization (WCO).
Pablo represents clients before national customs administrations. His extensive experience extends to litigation before the EU and national courts. Recent cases before the EU Court of Justice include Case C-552/14 P Canon Europa v Commission and Case C-553/14 P Kyocera Mita Europe v Commission, where the Court addressed the issue of whether economic operators could challenge the validity of EU customs measures directly before the EU Courts.
Pablo is widely published and regularly participates in training seminars organised by the WCO as an expert speaker on various customs matters, as well as other conferences in Europe, the US and South America. He is on the Editorial Board of the Trade and Customs Journal. He is recognised as a leading practitioner in his field by major legal directories, including Chambers and Partners, Legal 500, Best Lawyers and Who’s Who Legal.
♦ Mr. Graham Ide, Head of Trade Management EMEA, Eaton
Graham Ide worked in HM Revenue and Customs for over 23 years, covering all areas from Inland Controls (both SME and LBG) to Frontier work.
After working as part of the Deloitte Customs team for 6 years, I joined Invensys who were acquired by Schneider Electric. I was responsible for supporting and advising business units in UK, Ireland, Nordics, Baltics and Middle East on all matters of import and export compliance. I was also a key member of the UK Exit team there. After 4 years, I joined Eaton as their Head of Trade Management EMEA.
♦ Ms. Amanda Shires, Trade Compliance Official – Western Europe, Xylem
Amanda is originally from the USA and started her career in International Trade with Sandler & Travis Trade Advisory Services while living in her home state of Michigan. While there, she obtained her US Customs Broker’s License. She later moved to Chicago to take on the role of Trade Compliance Specialist for Xylem’s manufacturing facility in Morton Grove, IL. After a year she was transferred to England to become Xylem’s Trade Compliance Official for the UK and Ireland, shortly later also taking on responsibility for France and BeNeLux.
She was heavily involved in Brexit preparations for her company and continues to support daily business in the UK and the rest of Western Europe.
Amanda holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and French from DePaul University in Chicago and a Master of Science in International Economics from the University of Nottingham. She currently lives in Nottinghamshire with her family and their Boston Terroir.
♦ Mr. Gokhan Konak, Head of Export Control & Customs – GB&I, Siemens Healthcare Ltd.
Gokhan Konak joined Siemens in 2009 and held different positions in Supply Chain Management, Regulatory Affairs and Export Control & Customs.
In 2018, he was appointed as Head of Export Control and Customs for Siemens Healthineers in UK and Ireland.
Prior to Siemens Healthineers, Gokhan worked in the automotive industry. He held operational and leadership roles in Turkey, Germany and the UK for Ford Motor Company.
Siemens Healthineers is a global leader in medical technology with around 48,000 employees in over 70 countries and a turnover north of 13 billion EUR.
♦ Ms. Henriette Wright, Customs Manager EMEA, Adient
Henriette Wright UK Customs Manager and Trade Controls EMEA at Adient. My background is legal, I am a qualified lawyer under the Spanish Jurisdiction, but I have always been passionate about International Law.
I have been working in Global Customs and Logistics for over 15 years. Implementing processes and managing operations globally.
My experience touches all types of transport modes. I have managed compliance for bonded warehouses, different customs regimes, controlled goods (CITES) not only regionally but also globally providing expertise, clarity on customs compliance matters and implementing processes and Supply Chain solutions.
Most of my career has happened in the luxury retail sector, working for global retail businesses like De Beers Diamond Jewellers or Burberry.
I joined the Automotive sector with Adient in March 2021 to support and provide customs compliance advice and implementation of new process changes, aligned with the new regulations after Brexit. Since then I have focused on ensuring new UK border control processes are correctly implemented and necessary changes are applied from our pants, hauliers, brokers and the very much training and awareness is given to the teams in UK and EMEA. Another big part of my role at Adient is the Trade controls for the EMEA region, being the centre of expertise for UK and EU matters on Sanctions and Export Control regimes.
♦ Mr. Alejandro Valle Carrillo, Head of Customs, Bentley Motors Ltd.
Alejandro Valle Carrillo is the Head of Customs at Bentley Motors Ltd, based in the company’s headquarter in Crewe, in UK. He and his team are responsible for defining, implementing and operating the strategy related to Customs operations, in order to optimize the import duty impact, ensuring at the same time compliance with Customs rules and regulations. Compliance with Export Control regulations is also within his remit.
Alejandro has developed a professional career in Customs since 1998, having worked in different Customs brokerage and freight companies, including CEVA and DHL. For the last 17 years, he has focused his professional development in the automotive sector, holding different positions like Country Customs Manager for Spain, Portugal and Morocco for Delphi Automotive, or Customs Manager for Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK. He joined Bentley Motors in 2018, with the mission to create an in-house Customs structure and ensure the company’s Brexit readiness from a Customs standpoint.
Alejandro obtained a degree in Law from the University of Cadiz, in Spain. Since 2017, Alejandro is the Chairman on the Customs & Tariff Working Group in the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT).
